User interface

AutoCAD (originally named “AutoCad”) is a two-dimensional (2D) drafting and design program. It is designed to enable users to design and draft buildings and architectural or engineering projects. A three-dimensional (3D) modeling program is also available, but not as a base for this use.

AutoCAD is available in five different editions. The most common and widely used edition is AutoCAD LT. For smaller companies or for users who need to use AutoCAD on a limited budget, the Express edition is available. The Classic edition is for users who want to design architectural and engineering projects. The Architectural Designer edition is for design professionals and students who require additional functions for architectural and engineering design. The interface is designed to be intuitive. A toolbar, which provides a means to access several commands, and a status bar at the bottom of the screen with user-configurable settings are both features of the interface. A menubar is also available, which contains all of the main menu items and shortcut keys (hotkeys). The menu items can be accessed by selecting menu items in the menu bar or via the hotkeys. There are also three toolbars that can be configured to provide extra functionality.

The primary user interface is the 2D drawing area. The drawing area is divided into two parts. At the top left is the toolbar. Below the toolbar is the status bar and below the status bar are the dimensions and scales. Dimensions and scales are divided into three categories: horizontal, vertical, and from/to. When entering a dimension or scale from the from/to category, a tooltip is displayed, which includes the dimension or scale’s name and the exact from/to units. If there are a few of these from/to units, a column or panel can be created to display them. Below the status bar and dimensions are drawing objects, which can be edited.

At the top right of the 2D drawing area is a selection box that lists all active drawing objects. The selection box can be moved around the screen. There is also a zoom feature that will increase or decrease the scale of the drawing area. If a command is selected in the toolbar, the selected tool will appear in the selection box. If the cursor is not in the drawing area, the active tool will appear in the selection box.
