Jafe is a little program written in Java (1.4.2/1.5 compatible), that allows you to manage your sensible data (passwords, PINs, IDs, small files) in a intuitive and well-organized way.
The data are saved using compression and strong encryption, to ensure that, once saved, it will be impossible for a malicious user to access to them without a passkey, or even to know that they are meaningful data at all – they’ll look just random rubbish to everyone but you.

Jafe allows you to save your data in a very easy-to-manage manner, including adding new password/PIN/ID files, backing them up, encrypting them or uploading them to Jafe from anywhere!
Once your data are saved, they’re stored in a secure location, in a way that cannot be accessed without your passkey or a one-time ID code.

Root Filesystem
Disclaimer: I’m not an expert, and none of the stuff below should be interpreted as a guarantee that it is safe or that it works. I’ve used all the utilities below without issues, but I have not tested them extensively.
Using what is called a LiveFS, you can write a filesystem that you can mount on your main system, and as long as it is properly encrypted you will be able to decrypt it without problems using any Linux utility.
This way, your sensitive data will be on an encrypted filesystem, while you’ll use your main system to see and manipulate the filesystem.
Now, there are many different ways of encrypting data.
One of the most common one is to use the AES-128 algorithm, which requires 128 bits of keys to be used for encryption and decryption.
That means that you’ll need a passkey that is 128 bits long, which you will have to change at least once every 6 months.
Alternatively, you can use a more efficient algorithm, like AES-192 or AES-256. In this case, the required passkey will be 192 or 256 bits long, respectively.
When encrypting your filesystem, you’ll need to use the correct passkey.
To generate the correct passkey, you can generate it using any AES-256 secure random number generator.
This way, you will have a good chance of decrypting your files successfully, even if somebody has access to your system and captures the data you encrypted.
By default, any utility that you use to encrypt your filesystem will use random keys, which means that there’s a high chance that, in case somebody captures your filesystem, he will be able to decrypt it without problems.
To prevent this from happening, use a file called AES_KEY that will be placed in the same directory as your encrypted files, and will contain your passkey.
You’ll need this passkey only to mount your filesystem, and it will be discarded as soon as you unmount it.
After that, you’ll need to copy AES_KEY to each of your system’s /etc/crypttab and /etc/cryptsetup/{luks|luks-crypt-0|

Jafe allows you to store your personal passwords, personal identification number (PINs), and/or files securely (using strong encryption and compression) and in an easy to manage way. This means that, even if someone gets your password or file, he or she will not be able to access them.
Basically, you enter your data in an “unsecure” field, and Jafe encrypts it. When you want to store it, you just press the button, and the encrypted data are saved on your computer in a “secure” field. When you want to retrieve it, you just enter your password in the “secure” field, and the data are retrieved from the “unsecure” field and re-encrypted.
Now, that’s all pretty obvious. But how does it work? Let’s take an example:
Say you need to save a file called “phone.txt”. In this example, the file is saved in “C:\MyDocuments\phone.txt”, and your user name and password are:

You enter them in the “unsecure” field of the “Passwords and file storage” dialog of Jafe. Then you press the button “Save to a secure field”. The program encrypts “phone.txt” and saves it in a field named “JafeData::file.txt”, in a folder named “jafe”.
When you want to retrieve the file, you enter your password in the “secure” field of the “Passwords and file storage” dialog. Jafe looks up the directory where “jafe” is saved, in this case “C:\MyDocuments\jafe\jafeData::file.txt”, and looks for a file named “phone.txt” that matches the information you’ve entered in the “unsecure” field. If it finds it, it retrieves it from there and decrypts it. The program then saves it in your “unsecure” field.
You can then open “phone.txt” and read its content.
In this example, we could also add a password to the “phone.txt” file. We would enter the password in the “unsecure” field, and in the “secure” field we would enter the same password again. Jafe would then be able to decrypt the file, and retrieve the password from the “unsecure” field, and use it to encrypt the file again (when you want to save it back in the future).
The program can also be used in the opposite way, you can save files and passwords in “unsecure” fields, and retrieve them from the “secure” fields.
